Elevator wins Fresh Generation prize
The 5th Fresh Film Fest festival of student and first feature films concluded Aug 30, with main prizes going to films from Argentina and Romania.
I Hear Your Scream won the grand prize in the main international competition of feature and documentary student films. The film's director, Pablo Lamar, is a student of the Universidad del Cine (UCINE) in Buenos Aires.
Romanian director George Dorobantu won the Fresh Generation international competition of first and second features with his film Elevator. The film previously won the Debut Award at the Transilvania International Film Festival.
The Theatre Optique prize for best animated or experimental film went to Plastic Bags by director Milos Tomic, a student of the Filmová a televizní fakulta AMU (FAMU) in Prague. In the same section, German director Daniel Höpfner won a special jury award for his short film Anhalter.
Polish director Grzegorz Muskala won the Centropa competition for best film from Central and Eastern Europe with his short film My Father Is Sleeping (Mein Vater Schläft). Muskala is a student of the Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb).
Michal Reichstäter won the Kontakt competition of Czech amateur and independent film with his film Playing.
The festival audience award went to Zoologic, an animated film from Nicole Mitchell, who is a student of California Institute of the Arts.
Slovenian director Olmo Omerz won a special jury award for his film The Second Act.
The festival opened with a screening of Jan Nemec's work-in-progress, Holka Ferrari Dino, about the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.
The 5th Fresh Film Fest screened 200 films, 51 of those in competition. Held in Karlovy Vary, the festival saw nearly 3,000 visitors, most of them film students.
