Swinton to head Berlinale jury

Scottish actress Tilda Swinton – who earlier this year won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in Michael Clayton and has recently founded a film festival in her hometown – has been named jury president for the 59th Berlin International Film Festival (February 5-15, 2009).

Festival director Dieter Kosslick commented: "Her commanding screen presence has left its mark on contemporary, innovative film".

Besides her acting talents – which are much sought-after in both Hollywood (The Chronicles of Narnia) and Europe (Derek Jarman and Sally Potter, with whom she has closely collaborated, and more recently Béla Tarr) – Swinton has also been involved in creating film projects. She wrote and produced the recent film portrait and homage to Jarman, Derek, which was directed by Isaac Julien and presented in the Panorama section at Berlin.
