Antichrist gets SFI grant

by

Lars von Trier’s much-anticipated English-language film Antichrist has been granted SEK1.5m in production support from the Swedish Film Institute (SFI).

Von Trier’s first foray into the horror genre is now in the editing phase after filming in Germany. Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg star in the psychological thriller/horror film as a married couple who withdraw to a secluded woodland cabin after the loss of their child.

The film is produced by Meta Louise Foldager (Zentropa Denmark) in co-production with Memfis Film (Sweden), Zentropa International Köln (Germany), Slot Machine (France), and Lucky Red (Italy).

TrustNordisk has already closed some 30 territories on the film, including Greece (Video Seven); Estonia (Estinfilm); Lithuania and Latvia (Acme Film); Poland (Gutek); Hungary (Budapest Film); Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina (Discovery Film & Video); and Romania (ProRom). Domestic theatrical distribution through Nordisk Film is set for September 11, 2009.

A second feature film was awarded SEK1m in production support by the SFI: the thriller Isolerad (“Isolated”) by Johan Lundborg and Johan Storm, produced by Migma Film as part of the low budget scheme Rookie.

Nahid Persson Sarvestani's film The Queen and I, the first ever Swedish documentary selected to compete at the Sundance Film Festival (in January, 2009), was awarded SEK2m. The film produced by RealReel Doc features the Iranian-born director’s various encounters with the Shah’s wife Farah Diba. On the surface, the two women on the surface have nothing in common – Persson Sarvestani took part in the revolution that ousted the Shah – but actually share quite a few life experiences. The film will be released theatrically in Sweden by Folkets Bio next February.
