BERLINALE 2009 Spain

Llosa’s Milk of Sorrow joins race for Golden Bear

by

The Milk of Sorrow – the second feature by Barcelona-based Peruvian director Claudia Llosa (see news) – is so far the only Spanish production set to vie for the Golden Bear at the forthcoming Berlin International Film Festival (February 5-15).

Like Llosa’s debut work (Madeinusa), the film is set in the director’s native Peru. The story centres on Fausta (Magaly Solier), who suffers from a strange condition called teta asustada (“frightened breast”), which is carried in the breast milk of women who were raped during the Peruvian War. However, the death of her mother forces Fausta to face her fears and the secret she hides within.

The film is a majority Spanish production (80% investment, divided equally between Wanda Visión and Oberón Cinematográfica) with co-production backing from Peruvian company Vela, which is owned by Llosa.

Wanda Visión is set to release the title domestically on February 13. International sales will be managed by The Match Factory.
