The highlight of 2008 was Stefan Ruzowitzy’s success at the Academy Awards with The Counterfeiters, which was awarded the Best Foreign Language Film. This intriguing KZ-drama deals with the ‘Operation Bernhard’, believed to be the biggest counterfeiting mission in history. The Oscar win increased the audience by 150,000 to 190,000 in Austrian cinemas and made the production a remarkable international success. The Counterfeiters also marks a shift towards genre cinema. Thus, the movement once known as the Nouvelle Vague Viennoise, featuring an introspective approach and brittle narratives, is succeeded by a collection of films that stand alongside tangible attempts at gene cinema.
