FESTIVALS Italy

Taormina Fest branches out in Sicily, celebrates French cinema

by

After focusing on Egypt and Turkey, the Taormina Film Fest (June 13-20) will feature France as its guest of honour, with eight contemporary films, two noteworthy premieres at the Teatro Antico and a Grand French Gala on June 19. Actress Dominique Sanda will receive the prestigious Taormina Arte Award.

Two Oscar-nominated directors have already confirmed they will be part of this year’s jury: France’s Laurent Cantet and Israel’s Ari Folman.

The 55th edition of the festival, directed by the chief international critic of The Hollywood Reporter, Deborah Young, brings with it a substantial change. During the main festival in Taormina, a series of special events will be offered, as well as some of the competition films, at large, open-air cinemas in other Sicilian cities.

There are also new two festival sections: Campus Taormina, which will be an even more interactive event for the 400 participating university students, and Spazio Taormina, for producers, distributors and buyers.
