De la Cruz’s Muertos come to life onscreen

by

This Friday, Ángel de la Cruz’s Los Muertos Van Deprisa (“The Dead Go So Quickly”) hits Spanish theatres. This is the director’s first live-action, solo effort after the two Goya-winning animated films he co-directed with Manolo Gómez: The Living Forest (2001) and Midsummer Dream

For his “good old-fashioned comedy”, De la Cruz returned to his native Galicia, a region he says is "full of supernatural beliefs, people who are hard on the outside but soft on the inside and typically Galician humour”. The film's ensemble cast is headed by Neus Asensi, Chete Lera and Manuel Manquiña and the region’s rural and maritime landscape also plays a central role in the film.

Penned by the De la Cruz, the film opens with Irene – a lorry driver for a wholesale company – arriving in the small seaside town of Fariño del Mar to buy some seafood. Unfortunately, her lorry gets stuck between a statue and the cemetery gate.

This disrupts the funeral of the famous Cándido, whose body is being transported home again. The town has to decide whether to dismantle the statue or the lorry, causing old resentments and differences to resurface. To make matters worse, the deceased Cándido doesn’t seem to want to leave behind the world of the living.

Los Muertos Van Deprisa was co-produced by Artematica Producciones, Semprecinema Producións, Voz Audiovisual, Rosp Corunna, Perro Verde Films, Resonancia Postproducción and Cinematógrafo Films. The film will be released by Buena Vista International on 40 screens.
