FUNDING Spain

"The government's killing cinema"

- FAPAE, the Iberian film producers' guild, condemns the Spanish Minister of Finance's intention to cut national film production funding by a massive 30 per cent

Eduardo Campoy, the president of Spain’s Film Producers’ Federation - FAPAE - condemned plans by the Iberian Finance minister to cut state funding for Spanish film production by 30 per cent. “On average, the France contributes 40 per cent of a given film's budget, that number rises to 60 per cent in Italy, and in Spain we don’t even reach 20 per cent. This is a very serious decision because, given the current crisis, this cut will result in the death of Spanish cinema in 2004,” said Campoy.
If the cuts are implemented, the film production sector will receive Euros 31.2 million, fully Euros 9.4 million less than in 2001.
Iberian film producers are thinking about presenting the Administration with a list of reforms they would like to see included in the project that is currently being elaborated.
