Danish Wave hits London

by

- A week-long review of the best of recent, classic and innovative Danish cinema to be screened 11-17 October in London

After Paris, the londoners will be the first audiences in Britain to enjoy a whole week of Danish films during The Danish Wave scheduled to take place in a number of the capital’s cinemas from 11-17 October. Organised in collaboration with a number of Danish embassies, the films were selected by the Danish Film Institute and they represent the very best of both recent films and older classics, as well as a handful of titles by young Danish film students. Danish cinema really took off in a big way after Lars von Trier and his colleagues set down the Dogma ‘95 Manifesto. “Without von Trier, I do not think we would have had a Danish wave,” said the Danish National Film School’s Mogens Rukov. This review coincides with Denmark’s semester at the EU presidency and is just one of a number of important events and initiatives to promote awareness of Danish culture in the world. “Danish films are one of the strongest cards we can play,” explained Rukov.
The programme includes features by Carl th. Dreyer, Jorgen Leth, Thomas Vinterberg, Per Fly, Ole Christian Madsen and Tómas Gíslason as well as short films and documentaries by Jesper Jargil and Klaus Kjeldsen and the Danish Wave will subsequently visit Moscow and Berlin.
