Children’s film wins top award in Utrecht

The curtain came down at the 22nd Dutch Film Festival of Utrecht on 4 October with the Golden Calf for best film going to Vincent Bal for Minoes. The film’s female lead, Carice van Houten also won the best actress Calf.
Based on the children’s book by Annie M.G. Schmidt, Minoes was produced by
Burny Bros (Bros Bos Film TV Productions). The film received an excellent reception in Germany and Austria as well as the Netherlands and Belgium.
The best director nod went to Alejandro Agresti for Valentin and George Sluizer (The Stonecraft) was this year’s recipient of a Lifetime Achievement prize. Dutch film industry professionals decided that Paula van der Ouest’s latest film, Zus & Zo, produced by De Luwte, will represent Holland in the race for the March 2003 best foreign film Oscar. Zus & Zo is loosely based on Anton Chekov’s Three sisters and Jacob Derwig won the best male lead Golden Calf for his interpretation of Nino, the brother in the story. Best screenplay went to Edwin Devries for his screen adaptation on Harry Mullisch’s novel “The Discovery of Heaven”. Best documentary was won by the film that opened the Utrecht event, Ramses by Pietre Fleury.
