- CNC expert committee chooses François Ozon’s movie to represent France next March in Los Angeles
François Ozon’s musical comedy, 8 Women was chosen to represent France in the best foreign film category at the 75th edition of the Oscars, scheduled for 23 March 2003 in Los Angeles. A specially appointed CNC commission that included Frédéric Mitterand (president of the Commission d'avance sur recettes), Thierry Frémaux (the artistic director of the Cannes Film Festival), Alain Terzina (president of the National Film Commission) and Unifrance president, Daniel Toscan du Plantier the title.
The next hurdle for Ozon’s film will be next 11 February when the Academy announces the various nominations.
There is a good chance that 8 Women, which won an important award at the 52nd Berlin Film Festival, will beat Amélie’s 2002 record of 5 Oscar nominations especially since the cast includes some of France’s most famous actresses like Catherine Deneuve, Fanny Ardant, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Béart and Virginie Ledoyen.
The movie is doing good business in America after being seen by 3.7 million French filmgoers and 2.3 million elsewhere.
