VENICE 59 Awards

Sophia Loren to get Piero Bianchi Award

Italy’s film journalists guild has decided to present national treasure, Sophia Loren, with the Piero Bianchi Award. Created in memory of one of the “founding fathers” of Italian film journalism, the Piero Bianchi traditionally goes to individuals who have made a significant contribution to spreading awareness of Italian cinema and there can be no doubt that for over than forty years, Sophia Loren has done just that. This is only the second time in its history that the award has gone to a woman, the first being veteran screenwriter, Suso Cecchi D’Amico. The award will be presented on the evening of 30 August. Sophia Loren will be at the 59th edition of the Venice Film Festival to present her latest film, Between Strangers, out of competition. This Italo-Canadian co-production is very much a “family affair” and was directed by Loren’s son, Edoardo Ponti.
