FUNDING Denmark

A boost for cinema

- Minister promises a three-year multi-million cash injection for Danish film production and nurturing new talent

In a suprise move, Denmark’s minister for culture Brian Mikkelsen said he had earmarked DKR 100 million ((Euros13.465.000) for Danish film production and to support and encourage new filmmaking talent for a three-year period from 2002-2005. The announcement came out of left field since the conservative government recently announced a series of cut-backs in cultural affairs spending.
It is now up to the Danish Film Institute to elaborate just how the DKr 65 million annually should be spent. “If the government is willing to welcome our request and maybe even a bit more, it will be possible to maintain both the number of films and the quality and level of production for which we’ve become known around the world,” said DFI director Soren Kjaer.
