film profile], admits he knew nothing about Seraign, the industrial Belgian city at the heart of his film. Locations with a rich history are important to Smits and he takes a documentary approach to writing his screenplays, directly on location. At the same time, the director included autobiographical elements in his story, to make a narrative film rather than a documentary. The film portrays characters who are increasingly more individualistic and blocked characters, in whose lives it is always winter.
