The story was conceived by the writer Nicolò Ammaniti, who after a trip to Puglia, was impressed and inspired by the "dry and arid land without even the protective shade of a tree or bush". The director, attracted by the thriller, produced the film, because he saw the possibility "to portray reality whilst distancing myself from comedy and realism".
