British director Stephen Daldry is interviewed with the cast during the press conference of the 53rd Berlin International Film Festival, where his film The Hours was screened.
Stephen Daldry used to manage the Royal Court Theatre in London in the 1990s. Following the huge international success of Billy Elliot, he was approached by Miramax to direct The Hours, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Ed Harris.
Interviewed about his film, he explains how many people used to tell both him and screen player David Hale, that the book 'Mrs. Dalloway' was impossible to translate into a screen play, because not cinematic. Instead, he says, they found in the book a strong internal dramatic mechanism, that is evident from the connection between the three women.
Nicole Kidman, who plays Virginia Woolf, is also interviewed, and she says that she was one of the authors she was less interested in at school, preferring instead romantic writers. That is why she believes she was lucky to have had the chance to play this role, because she was able to discover and appreciate her.
