"While I wanted to talk about shaping fake wildlife images, I realised that I’ve been shaping myself according to the patriarchal gaze from the outside"

CANNES 2025: The Belgian filmmaker discusses her autobiographical work, winner of the Doc Alliance Award for Best Short Film
The Doc Alliance Award for Best Short Film at this year's Marché du Film went to Belgian filmmaker Marion Guillard's We Had Fun Yesterday. Having studied wildlife filmmaking, Guillard brings that observational and reflective perspective into this 35-minute autobiographical work, turning the camera inward to explore the gaze — from inside to outside — and the staging of the body, femininity, and the natural world.
The jury — Fernando Ganzo (Cahiers du Cinéma), Caroline Kirberg (pong film) and Gerald Weber (sixpackfilm) — praised the film as “an honest and beautifully crafted work that creates a tender rhythm through its layering of image and voiceover.” They highlighted how the filmmaker “pulls us into her imagery and stream of consciousness, weaving personal quests of identity and family with her view of being a filmmaker.” The award, endowed with €3,000, supports emerging talents in European documentary cinema.
