Yannick Bossenmeyer, the co-CEO of Blockframes, which was introduced at the Cannes Film Festival last year (see the news), tells us more about its evolution and recent innovations, such as AI Magic Import, freshly announced during the Cannes Next | Visionaries of Tomorrow panel, which has just taken place at the Marché du Film.
Cineuropa: How has Blockframes’ journey evolved since its introduction at Cannes 2024, and what key lessons have shaped the development of AI Magic Import?
Yannick Bossenmeyer: Blockframes, a film revenue management tool, has come a long way since Cannes 2024. At that time, we announced our partnership with Freeway Entertainment (a world leader in collection account management) to co-develop Blockframes. This collaboration introduced a unique combination of cutting-edge tech development and over two decades of in-depth revenue sharing and reporting expertise, and opened doors to the screen industries internationally, allowing us to win our first international clients.
Then, our work on AI bore fruit: Cannes 2025 sees the grand launch of AI Magic Import, which is a small revolution and will save producers a huge amount of time in film revenue management. We found that the time required to integrate contracts into the tool was a major obstacle for producers. Magic Import is the first tool of its kind capable of reading and interpreting film revenue contracts using artificial intelligence. By automatically generating detailed revenue waterfalls within the Blockframes platform, the tool turns a previously manual, days-long task into a matter of minutes – enabling faster decision-making and more transparent reporting. Gone are the nights spent poring over Excel spreadsheets filled with complicated formulas...
Finally, we have also continued to develop another feature that was highly requested by producers: revenue simulation. This allows them to test their assumptions and determine the film's break-even point.
AI Magic Import aims to automate revenue distribution contracts — how do you see this transforming the daily operations of producers, sales agents and rights holders in concrete terms?
AI Magic Import is mainly aimed at producers. It saves valuable time by avoiding the need to enter contracts “by hand”, and more broadly, Blockframes also saves an incredible amount of time when calculating revenue distribution and editing statements. We are now in the process of automating the integration of revenue reports from distributors and sales agents. Ultimately, the entire chain will be streamlined: producers will save time and be able to edit their statements quickly, distributors and sales agents will simply have to upload their PDFs to the tool, and rights holders will receive their statements – accurate ones! – in a shorter time frame, with centralised information and history, which will simplify everyone's life.
With backing from the CNC and MEDIA, Blockframes is gaining strong institutional support – how important are these partnerships for scaling your impact across the international film ecosystem?
The support of the CNC and MEDIA has been essential for the development of Blockframes – for the financing of technical developments, of course, but also more broadly.
Thanks to the CNC, we have been able to develop a specific module for France, RCA Magic Import. The RCA [Registre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel] is a public register developed by the CNC in which all French film contracts are filed. We were able to train AI Magic Import on these contracts and develop this specific module for France that will make life even easier for producers. Based on the film title, Blockframes will directly search the RCA for all contracts related to the movie and integrate them into the tool. Producers no longer need to search for and import PDFs of contracts.
As for MEDIA, it is a valuable gateway to Europe, an essential playground for Blockframes, since the tool enables producers to comply with European reporting regulations. Indeed, EU countries are in the process of implementing the Digital Single Market Directive, which imposes a reporting obligation on producers towards authors. We are in discussions with public authorities in various countries to offer producers a version of Blockframes tailored to national requirements.
