The Secretary General of the Korean Film Council, Kim In Soo, and the Director of the Estonian Film Institute, Edith Sepp, signed the Memorandum of Mutual Understanding between Estonia and South Korea at the Industry@Tallinn meeting within the 17th Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn.

With the memorandum, Estonia is the first country in Northern and Eastern Europe to have entered this high level cooperation with the South Korean film industry.

An extensive South Korean delegation including members of the Korean Film Council, Busan Film Festival, Producers Guild of Korea, sales agents and acclaimed producers attended the signing and the Industry@Tallinn event.

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and its Industry Days have already marked an important collaboration between South Korean and Estonian film audiences. In 2007 the Black Nights featured South Korea as its focus country with an extensive delegation led by the legendary head of Busan Film Festival, Kim Dong Ho. The Korean feature Castaway on the Moon won the audience award of Black Nights a few years later. Since then the Black Nights and Estonia have acted as the gateway for Korean cinema in the region with an annual extensive film programme and Korean industry presence.

"The signing of the memorandum between Estonia and South-Korea is not only signifying the importance of the Black Nights Film Festival and its position as an ongoing and important platform for Asian filmmakers to the region, but also underlines the role of the event as a bridge between the larger film industries of Europe and South-Korea", comments Sten Saluveer, head of Industry@Tallinn.

With the memorandum, the Estonian Film Institute and the Black Nights aim to strengthen the potential for international collaboration between South Korean and Estonian industries, by acknowledging two ongoing film projects.

The partners hope that the memorandum will provide new coproduction and production service collaboration opportunities across territories.

The memorandum also aligns itself with the meeting of European Commission Directorate General for Education and Culture with high officials from EU member states in Brussels on the 5th of December 2013 for the very first get together of the EU-Korea Cultural Cooperation Committee. Among others Ms Edith Sepp from the Estonian Film Institute will share the experience and expertise in cultural matters and practices with South Korea.
