After last year's very successful first experience with the Italy | Sundance Institute Screenwriters Workshop, the Capalbio International Film Festival announced its upcoming Capalbio | Future Storyteller Lab, an innovative training event to be hosted in the medieval town in Southern Tuscany (29 June – 2 July, 2016) during the 23^rd edition of the festival, which, since its foundation with Michelangelo Antonioni as its godfather, has been a showcase for the next generation of cinematic talent from around the world. The artistic director, Tommaso Mottola, and curator Colin Maunoury, with Stefania Ippoliti, representing Fondazione Sistema Toscana, presented the new lab project at the Italian Pavillon during the Cannes Film Festival.

The 2016 workshop on new technologies and storytelling strategies offers independent European filmmakers a unique chance to enter a fully immersive space to work intensively on their first or second feature film scripts, under the guidance of an extraordinary mentor, American director and screenwriter Colin Trevorrow. After working as both screenwriter and director in fiction and documentary film, Trevorrow directed and co-wrote Jurassic World (2015), the fourth highest-grossing movie of all times, and will direct the final chapter of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX, entering the history of this legendary space opera.

The Future Storyteller Lab includes an intensive three-day screenwriting workshop during which the selected filmmakers will work on their debut or sophomore feature film projects with an Italian screenwriter. The second section of the lab will include four panels dedicated to new formats and groundbreaking technologies, and curated by high-level industry players. 

The panels, conceived as a first look on upcoming cinema, will focus on: Video Mapping: screening cinema on architecture - in collaboration with the Kernel Festival, prestigious Italian event on audiovisual mapping, interactive and digital art. Video Gaming: interactivity and the new creative and distribution platforms – in collaboration with AESVI (Association of Italian Video Game Publishers and Developers) and Italian studio IV Productions. Creative Documentary | Storyboomers: documentary in the era of “selfies” and You-Tubers – with Israeli director Ayelet Albenda and Doc.it association. Virtual Reality: a 360-degree insight on innovation - in collaboration with OSVR (Open Source Virtual Reality).

Last but not least, the Lab programme includes an exclusive panel about the future of filmmaking with director Colin Trevorrow and a section presenting a selection of VR short films from the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference & Festival, the world-known event serving as a launching pad for new creative content at the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies. Furthermore, one of the six projects at the Lab will be chosen to attend the MIA (International Audiovisual Market) to be held in October (20-24, 2016) during the Rome Film Fest, providing them with a boost on the international market. 

The six film projects attending the Capalbio | Future Storyteller Lab will be selected through an online global call. The deadline for application is June 3, 2016.
