Cannes Film Festival Critics' Week has renewed the initiative, Next Step, for the fourth year running, which aims to help young filmmakers (who made it through the competition in the corresponding section at Cannes) to take the plunge from short to feature-length films. Over four editions, Next Step has supported 38 filmmakers (42% female directors) from 19 countries. This year, 11 feature films supported by the programme will enter into financing or production, including 7500 by German director Patrick Vollrath (starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt ) and Le Déserteur, the French comedy by Antoine de Bary (starring Vincent Lacoste ).
Included in the lucky nine to be selected from the4th session (which includes a workshop organised by the Critics' Week in collaboration with TorinoFilmLab) is French director Magali Magistry (with Notre vie dans les forêts – an adaptation of the dystopian novel of the same name by Marie Darrieussecq and produced by Haut et Court) and Manon Coubia (with her project Flamme et Suza), Spanish director Laura Ferrés (with The Permanent Picture), Polish director Aleksandra Terpińska (with One Last Summer, which was produced by Madants) and British director Moin Hussain (with Balaena, produced by Escape Films).
Also headed to the next stage is the filmmaker of dual Argentinian and Costa Rican nationality, Sofia Quiros Ubeda (with Ceniza Negra, which was co-produced by the French company Promenade Films), the Filipino director Carlo Francisco Manatad (with Whether The Weather Is Fine - co-produced by the French outfit House on Fire), Canadian director Matthew Rankin (Akhavan) and American director Sam Kuhn (Wild Flowers).
