Shot in Reykjavik and its surroundings between March and April 2017, Börkur Sigthórsson's debut feature, Vultures, is a promising new Icelandic thriller. The film, edited by Elísabet Ronaldsdóttir (John Wick, Atomic Blonde), is currently in the post-production phase.
The story, penned entirely by Sigthórsson himself, is set in the capital and revolves around sharp-suited Erik (Gísli Örn Garðarsson), who is facing serious financial problems and therefore seeks help from his brother Atli (Baltasar Breki Samper), a petty criminal just released from prison. Initially distant and incompatible, the differences between the two brothers vanish as they team up to smuggle a shipment of cocaine into Iceland, inside plastic pellets swallowed by Sofia (Anna Próchniak), a young Polish drug dealer. The situation rapidly evolves when rule-breaking cop Lena (Marijana Jankovic) starts closing in on them and Sofia falls ill. With the drugs yet to reach their destination and a rival gang demanding a slice of the profits, Atli and Erik will be short on time and under incredible pressure.
The leads, Gísli Örn Garðarsson and Baltasar Breki Samper, have starred in a number of mostly Icelandic TV and film productions. Próchniak, who portrays Sofia, is a promising Polish actress, known for taking on the role of Weronika in the TV crime-drama Belle Epoque. Jankovic, who plays Lena, is a Danish actress of Montenegrin descent. To play this role, Jankovic learned Icelandic and Polish for the shoot.
