After the Czech film critics voiced their opinion on domestic cinema produced in 2017 (read the news), domestic academy members got their turn to do so for the 25^th time at the annual Czech Lions ceremony. These accolades paint a slightly different portrait of domestic production compared to the critics’ opinion. The Czech Film and Television Academy voted Bohdan Sláma’s dramedy Ice Mother [+lee también:

ficha de la película] as the country’s submission for the Best Foreign-language Film category at the 90^th edition of the Academy Awards, and in fact, the movie ended up being nominated in every category of the Czech Lions. At the end of the night, the production team behind Ice Mother left with six awards – for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Script. 

Three statuettes (from 13 nominations) were handed to Barefoot [+lee también:

ficha de la película] by writer-director Jan Svěrák, adapting a book by his father, Zdeněk Svěrák, and serving as a prequel to their 1991 film The Elementary School. The period biopic Milada [+lee también:

ficha de la película] by David Mrnka took home the Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Make-up and Hair Styling. Václav Kadrnka’s medieval road movie inspired by a poem about the Children’s Crusade, Little Crusader [+lee también:

ficha de la película], which was nominated in nine categories, won out in the Best Music category, whereas the Slovak-Czech co-produced rape drama Filthy [+lee también:

ficha de la película] by emerging director Tereza Nvotová, which won Best Film at the Czech Film Critics’ Awards, left the ceremony with one Lion for Best Editing. Domestic public broadcaster Czech Television won both TV awards, for Best Television Film or Miniseries, and Best Television Drama Series, thanks to Justice (Spravedlnost) by Slovak director Peter Bebjak and Svět pod hlavou (inspired by the BBC’s Life on Mars) by Marek Najbrt and Radim Špaček, respectively.

The atmosphere during the ceremony was politically charged, as Czech personalities from the film industry defended the independence of public broadcasters following the newly re-elected president’s jab at Czech Television during his inauguration speech. While receiving yet another award for a leading role, Slovakian actress Zuzana Krónerová warned against “the arrogance of power” in the wake of the murder of a Slovakian investigative journalist and his fiancée, which shocked the world and triggered a governmental crisis in Slovakia.
