Besides Richard Linklater (see the news), the upcoming Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (29 June–7 July) will honour Academy Award winner and five-time Oscar nominee Barry Levinson, a screenwriter, producer and director. Like William Friedkin, Jerry Schatzberg, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty, Levinson will be crowned with the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema, as his four-time Oscar-winning Rain Man, which also netted the Golden Bear and the David di Donatello Award for Best Foreign Film, celebrates its 30th anniversary. Levinson will personally introduce Rain Man as well as Wag the Dog, which scooped the Silver Bear – Special Jury Prize at the Berlinale and is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and his latest oeuvre starring Al Pacino, the biopic Paterno, about college-football titan Joe Paterno’s fall from grace.

The 53rd edition of the KVIFF will screen a digitally restored copy of Jan Němec’s Diamonds of the Night, recently unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival. This year’s retrospective will zoom in on poetic documentaries from the Baltic region, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the independence of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia (see the news), the East of the West competition will welcome films from the Middle Eastern territories for the first time (see the news), and Cineuropa will inaugurate its film criticism training programme for budding film journalists and critics, GoCritic! (see the news).

The 53rd edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will run from 29 June-7 July 2018.
