, majority-produced by Slovakia’s Lívia Filusová, of Furia Film, and co-produced by the Czech Republic and Russia. The film will be rolled out in Slovak theatres in late September, and will then open in cinemas in the Czech Republic in early October. The main character is portrayed by Lars von Trier regular Jean-Marc Barr, a French-American actor. “We sent Jean-Marc the script and waited to hear back whether he liked it or not,” Filusová told Cineuropa. “Two weeks later, we received his answer: he said that the topic impressed him, and since he had just wrapped a shoot, our dates did not clash with his other obligations.”

The story follows a married couple in crisis as the situation takes its toll on their 16-year-old daughter. After going out to celebrate her birthday, the daughter doesn’t make it home, which alarms both her parents and prompts the father to take justice into his own hands. The topic of the film also revolves around evil in mankind. Starring alongside Jean-Marc Barr is Russian actress Olga Simonova, plus a mostly Slovak and Czech cast. Besides the universal story and the topic of a dysfunctional marriage and its consequences for the children, the producer emphasised the international allure of the creative team – including a Russian director, award-winning Slovakian cinematographer Martin Žiaran and a Czech composer.

Filusová revealed to Cineuropa that the team is currently in negotiations with a London-based sales agent and is readying a PR campaign for the Slovak and Czech territories, while also “focusing on selling the film abroad”, she added.

Cellar is being produced by Slovakia’s Furia Film, and co-produced by Gate LCC (Russia), 8heads Productions (Czech Republic) and Radio and Television Slovakia. The Slovak Audiovisual Film supported the project, as did the Czech Film Fund, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian FederationEurimages and the Slovak Ministry of Culture.
