"To get a better grasp of the main transformations currently shaking up the film and audiovisual landscape, and try to draw up some proposals that will turn this paradigm shift into a virtuous circle that will ensure cinema gains independence, cultural diversity and access to works": such is the main ambition of the 28th Film Meetings organised by the ARP (Civil Society of Authors-Directors-Producers), which will unspool from 7-9 November in Dijon with, as is customary, an array of very high-level speakers and under the chairmanship of Romanian director Cristian Mungiu.
Two weeks after Canal+’s sudden and unexpected withdrawal from the renegotiations of its funding agreement with French cinema (the current version of which runs until the end of 2019), which simultaneously killed off the proposal (already approved by virtually all of the professional film organisations in France) for a (relatively modest) reform of the media timeline, and which is causing those producers who are more than a little anxious about the evolution of Canal+ (a major source of funding for French cinema) to break out in a cold sweat, the main protagonists will come face to face in Dijon for some clarifications (or perhaps some settling of scores) under the watchful eye of the new Minister of Culture, Franck Riester, who has had to juggle several hot potatoes inherited from the former incumbent.
As a matter of fact, on Thursday, the minister will open a debate entitled "Which audiovisual law to adopt in the digital age?", which will broach subjects such as piracy, the exhibition of cinematic works, obligations to invest in creation, and caps on any shifts towards the concentration and distortion of competition. The speakers will include Frédérique Bredin (president of the CNC), Maxime Saada (Canal+), Manuel Alduy (Twentieth Century Fox France), Ara Aprikian (TF1), David Kessler (Orange Studio and Orange Content), Laurent Samama (Google), producer Caroline Benjo (Haut et Court) and her counterpart Frédéric Brillion (Epithète Films and president of the Union of Film Producers).
Mariya Gabriel (European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society) will introduce (via video link) the discussion "Have the cultural exception and authors’ rights already lost the battle faced with copyright and the law of market forces?", which will involve the participation of producer Catherine Bozorgan (Manchester Films), while the subject of "public service broadcasting" will be discussed by guests such as Delphine Ernotte-Cunci (France Télévisions), producer Marie Masmonteil (Elzevir Films), filmmaker Katell Quillévéré and Belgium’s François Tron (RTBF). Also of note is a debate revolving around the "place of France and Europe in world cinema" with Italian producer Mario Gianani (Wildside), his French counterpart Eric Jehelmann (Jerico), director Lisa Azuelos and international sales agents Gaëlle Mareschi (Kinology and also a producer for Fluxus Films) and Jean-Christophe Simon (for German firm Films Boutique and also president of Europa International).
These 28th Film Meetings will also offer a round-table on sexism in the representation of women in film (with filmmakers Coralie Fargeat and Stéphane Foenkinos, as well as Maxime Delauney, a producer at Nolita Cinema, and Fabienne Silvestre-Bertoncini from the Lab des Femmes) and a number of pitching advice sessions led by producers Laurence Lascary (DACP Films), Juliette Grandmont (Clandestine Films), Matthias Weber (2425 Films), Thibault Gast (2425 Films) and Alexandre Gavras (KG Productions), not to mention a slew of screenings: Real Love [+lee también:
