CIRCLE - Women Doc Accelerator, a training and development programme for women filmmakers from Eastern Europe, organised by Serbian companies Wake Up Film and PulsArt, and Montenegro's Underhill Fest, in partnership with the European Documentary Network and the European Women's Audiovisual Network, has wrapped its 2018 edition with a module at DOK Leipzig. The programme has been developed and managed by Wake Up Film's Biljana Tutorov.

Eight women directors or producers with documentary films in development from Montenegro, Georgia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Greece and Russia (scroll down for the list of projects) worked on their projects during three modules. The first, which took place at the Underhill Fest in Podgorica in June, focused on an in-depth analysis of the projects; the second, unspooling in Novi Sad in August, dealt with project packaging; and the third and final module at DOK Leipzig was aimed at networking with the festival's numerous industry guests.

"CIRCLE is a unique programme because it offers the possibility to develop one’s film project in an open and customised manner," Serbian filmmaker Andrijana Stojković, who is taking part in the programme with the project One More Time, told Cineuropa. "What I found special about CIRCLE is that it emphasises the creative process and helps the authors understand their own work more deeply. The work during the three sessions shed new light on my film project, and twisted and turned it to make it clearer both to me as its creator and to potential audiences. The fact that the projects are in different phases of development, production or post-production keeps the participants’ inputs fresh and playful."

The list of expert tutors included Visions du Réel programmer Jasmin Bašić, Slovenian digital content producer Sara Božanić, Canadian sales agent and producer Aleksandar Govedarica (Syndicado), Serbian producer Dragana Jovović, Serbian editor-director Jelena Maksimović, Polish filmmaker Hanna Polak, Hungarian director Bernandette Tuza-Ritter and UK producer Paula Vaccaro.

"The experts had a wide understanding of both creative and production processes, and their insights helped me structure my initial idea. CIRCLE is the ‘support group’ that one needs while developing and making one’s documentary," said Stojković.

CIRCLE is supported by Film Center Serbia, the Film Centre of Montenegro and the Serbian Ministry of Culture.

Detailed information on the projects can be found here.
