won the Best Director award in Locarno in 2014), Portuguese director Pedro Costa this year wins two awards with his superb and uncompromisingly bitter Vitalina Varela [+lee también:

: the Golden Leopard, the supreme recognition of the festival, and the Leopard for Best Actress, given to Vitalina Varela, the lead of the film. An acting award which the jury of the International Competition, headed by Catherine Breillat, gave to the woman who, with her person, her story, and her tormented physicality gave body to Pedro Costa’s film. Beyond the hermeticism of a demanding and aesthetically grandiose cinema, which recalls masters of supernatural horror such as David Lynch (and his Elephant Man), Vitalina Varela exudes a desperate humanity that, in the end, can only touch us.

Accompanying Vitalina Varela on the highest steps of the podium in Locarno is the discreet but powerful Regis Myrupu, lead from The Fever [+lee también:

(FIPRESCI Awards) by Maya Da-Rin, who received the award for Best Actor. A person/character who, like Vitalina Varela, simultaneously embodies the contradiction of his native land and of his personal story.

from French director Damien Manivel, an ode to the power of dance, won the second most important award of the festival: the Leopard for Best Director. A Special Mention went to Maternal [+lee también:

from Italian director Maura Delpero, who also brought home the Ecumenical award, the Europa Cinemas Label award, and the Second Prize from the Youth Jury.

In the Filmmakers of the Present competition, Nafi’s Father from Senegalese director Mamadou Dia (who also won the Swatch First Feature Award, for best feature debut) won the Filmmakers of the Present Golden Leopard. Among the European films awarded in this important competition, we find the co-production between Romania and Serbia Ivana the Terrible [+lee también:
