After a month of showcasing the best short films, all clocking in at exactly one minute, Filminute has announced the winners for this year – amongst them the coveted Cineuropa Audience Award
Readers across Europe and beyond took part in the Cineuropa Filminute ‘Five Minute Challenge’ asking people to set aside just five minutes to watch five amazing films from across the continent. With each film providing an insight into the human condition and dealing with many of the pressing issues of the modern day, it’s appropriate that the film that finally took home the prize of CIneuropa Audience Award was Searching by Spanish filmmaker Manuel Martín Merino. Take a minute to watch the film here.
“The idea came from a friend that didn’t hear while I was yelling to him one day on the street,” said Merino, speaking to Cineuropa. “He was ‘kidnapped’ by his mobile phone even though we weren’t far from each other.
“Every reward I have got from where I have worked has always been the simple fact of shooting, learning and improving and never caring about the awards,” continues Merino “Always with a pinch of risk, and involving myself in an unexplored territory, And I think that the final result is this flm. But I’m always grateful to be awarded especially in a contest for international film. It makes you realize how many people has watched your work from all over the world, and also enjoyed it.”
The Best Filminute 2019 prize went to the emotionally affecting French film I Am Not Afraid from directors Merick & Gohu, which can be seen here. The film was voted for by an international jury which included French film editor Anne Goursaud, US writer Maile Meloy and film critic Alin Tasciyan.
Other films commended by the jury included Life Goes On (Norway, Dir. Henry K. Norvalls), The Tenants (Hungary, Dir. Regős Ábel) and Turn Back Time (Sweden, Dir. Daniel Lundh)
Urguayan film Uno De Nosotros, directed by Facundo Sosa, took home the People’s Choice award while Searching also came out on top on the ‘Top Rated Film’ category.
