The script was penned by writer-producer Michelle Ashford (the TV series Masters of Sex and The Pacific) and is set in 1943, during World War II. In detail, the story follows two brilliant Allied intelligence officers (played by Firth and Macfadyen) who come up with a disinformation strategy involving a dead body to help the war effort against the Axis powers. The historic events of Operation Mincemeat were previously adapted for the big screen in 1956, in Ronald Neame’s film The Man Who Never Was, based on Ewen Montagu’s book of the same name.

Operation Mincemeat is being produced by Charles S Cohen for Cohen Media Group (USA), Iain Canning and Emile Sherman for See-Saw (UK), and Kris Thykier for Archery Pictures (UK). See-Saw’s Simon Gillis will serve as executive producer.

American outfit FilmNation Entertainment and See-Saw’s sales arm, Cross City Films, sold the flick to various international territories at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. In particular, Warner Bros acquired it for several European markets, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Benelux. An official release date is yet to be disclosed.
