Italian Screenings has a new location: the internet. The market entirely dedicated to Italian film, which has always stood out for the variety of its locations (hosted by a different Italian city each year), will be held online for the very first time and has announced the dates of its 17th edition: 21-24 July. It’s a sign of recovery and continuity, not to mention the vitality of Italian cinema, which the event - organised by the Filmitalia contingent of the Istituto Luce Cinecittà in association with Unefa (the Italian Union of Film Exporters) - is looking to stimulate within the entire production sector, at this time of great uncertainty amidst the Coronavirus crisis.

Limbering up to host the Italian Screenings 2020 is the online platform Festival Scope Pro, which the world’s larger festivals and market players will already be familiar with. Brand new Italian film productions will be presented to an audience composed of buyers hailing from all corners of the globe, alongside international sales agents. The programme provides for somewhere in the region of 40 films, for the most part world premieres. Amongst these are a number of highly anticipated productions, in box office terms – comedies, genre films, and works by directors adored by the wider public – as well as more independent, arthouse-type titles.

In terms of participants, Screenings 2020 expects the number of market players hailing from Europe, the Americas and Asia to double, given the new, sizeable audience of online broadcasters and platforms who are able to take part. A stream of around 200 buyers and dozens of world sales are expected to “attend”.
