FEST’s atypical 16th edition has come to an end. The festival screened almost 100 films in three different cities (Espinho, Porto and Lisbon), indoors and outdoors (with overall sold out drive-in screenings — a new screening format introduced this year), and has now announced this year’s winners (watch the video).

, directed by Mounia Meddour, has won the Golden Lynx - Best Feature Fiction Award. Meddour’s feature debut (part of Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2019) was considered by the jury to be “an intimate and intense look upon the college free-spirited life of young girls, in a country on the verge of a civil war” as well as “a beautiful portrait of the generations of three Algerian women”, highlighting “the astounding performance by Lyna Khoudri”. Paxton Winters’ Pacificado received an Honorable mention in this category, for its unconventional approach to the police drama formula, capturing “the internal scenery as much as the external side of the favelas; the beauty, the fight and the politics adjacent to it all.” Lovemobil [+lee también:

In the Silver Lynx Competition, dedicated to short films from filmmakers under the age of 35 (an encompasses fiction, documentary, animation and experimental films), Tomek Popakul’s Acid Rain stood out to the jury for “the technical quality of the artistic direction and its connection with the theme” and an intelligent use of “the drawing and its cadency, transmitting a rave-like vibe and the complexity of the life of the characters”, winning the Best Animation Short Award.
Anton BialasAt The Entrance of the Night received the Best Experimental Short Award in this section, for “creating a history line, symbolic and emotive, that puts us in the extreme that the characters live in, […] through the humanisation and poetry of the cinematographic composition, well exploited in its most experimental form”. Marshmallows, Duván Duque’s second short film, was awarded the Best Fiction Short Award and Black Lagoon, directed by Felipe Esparza, received the Best Documentary Short Award.

Guilherme Daniel received the National Grand Prix for Erva Daninha, a film the jury considered to be a “consistent, well built, and appealing” film, “that stands out for its surprising narrative and for the subtle terror images”. In the same category, Quando a Luz se Apaga, directed by Tânia Prates, received an Honourable Mention.
