The sixth edition of the MIA|International Audiovisual Market is set to unspool in Rome from 14-18 October 2020, in the familiar setting of the Barberini Palace, and in a safe and secure, COVID-proof environment. Besides the on-site events, there will also be activities organised on the MIA DIGITAL online platform.

As every year, the market will offer the selected projects the opportunity to be presented in the Co-production Market Pitching Forum, in front of an audience of national and international key players.

The rich line-up for this year, encompassing a total of 50 projects hailing from more than 20 countries, includes films, TV series and documentaries. Half of the 16 projects in the MIA|Film Co-Production Market, coming from 14 countries and selected by Paola Malanga (deputy director, Production and Acquisitions division, Rai Cinema, Italy), Joseph Rouschop (producer, Tarantula, Belgium) and Katarzyna Siniarska (head of sales, New Europe Film Sales, Poland), are by female directors, which serves as proof of the MIA’s commitment to the inclusion and promotion of the work being done by women.

Among the titles picked this year are: Amor y Dolor by Emanuele Scaringi (The Armadillo’s Prophecy [+lee también:

This year, in addition to the international selection, the MIA|Film Co-Production Market, headed up by Alexia De Vito, will be presenting “Wanna Taste IT?”, a new section exclusively devoted to Italian film projects in development. It is intended to be a launch pad and incubator for Italy’s industry and talent, thanks to targeted networking events with potential sales agents and financiers, and high-level training and refresher sessions, plus carefully tailored meetings with film-sector experts, and representatives of institutions, funds and support programmes.

The team has also confirmed that the Eurimages Co-production Development Award will be given out at the 2020 edition. The Council of Europe fund will provide a cash prize of €20,000, intended to aid the development of the project that best fulfils the criteria related to collaboration and co-production – values that Eurimages holds dear.

This year, the MIA is also presenting the ARTE Kino International Prize, a €6,000 award with which ARTE intends to support the development of a project, which will be chosen by a designated jury.

Moreover, the MIA|Film division, helmed by Francesca Palleschi, is presenting three “head-on” discussion sessions. Besides the annual rendezvous organised in conjunction with Europa Distribution – which this year will home in on the topic “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Distribution But Were Afraid to Ask: How to Survive a Pandemic” – a number of other important debates will be added. Among these is the panel “Developing Original Films for Local Audiences with the OTT Platform”, dedicated to exploring strategies for developing original cinematic content on the local and European level with the major streaming platforms, which will see the participation of producers who have developed movies for said platforms and the involvement of representatives of the over-the-top streamers themselves. Meanwhile, “International Co-production in COVID Times and Beyond: Film Financing in the Contemporary Scenario”, organised in conjunction with ACE Producers with the intention of sparking an open debate, will address a number of different, extremely timely topics linked to the situation for international co-productions in the COVID-19 era and, especially, post-COVID. Among the confirmed participants in the conversation set to be moderated by Jacobine van der Vloed (director and head of studies at ACE) are Iole Giannattasio (Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Eurimages), Marta Donzelli (Vivo Films), Tobias Pausinger (The Match Factory, Germany), Dominique Malet (Cofiloisirs, France), producer Tom Dercourt (Cinema Defacto, France) and his colleague Jonas Dornbach (Komplizen Film, Germany).
