For the sixth consecutive year, the Milan Film Network (MFN) has hosted its event for industry professionals, dedicated to the world of independent Italian cinema: Milan Industry Days - MID, which unspooled online this year for the very first time. Having kicked off in November with the In Progress Lab’s training meetings, Milan Industry Days concluded on 17 and 18 December with the 6th edition of the MFN Workshop, the first post-production support fund for Italian feature films. Composed of partners Valentina Andreoli, Riccardo Annoni and Carlotta Cristiani, and presided over this year by Beatrice Fiorentino (General Delegate of Venice’s Critics’ Week), the jury awarded the Milan Film Network Prize of €6,000 to Gianluca Matarrese’s L’ultima volta.

The MFN’s aim with this Workshop is to lend concrete aid to films in production, as well as offering networking opportunities to Italian directors and producers with a view to facilitating access to the market and to the international festival circuit for their films in post-production.

Led by curators Alice Arecco and Alessandra Speciale in collaboration with Antonio Pezzuto, the Workshop was attended by 67 accredited professionals including directors, producers, distributors, buyers, commissioning editors, and Italian and international festival directors and programmers.

The directors and producers of the 7 selected works in progress (chosen from among the 53 films which responded to the call) presented a 30-minute extract of their films before embarking on four hours of one-to-one meetings. National and international festivals attending the event included the Venice Film Festival, Venice’s Giornate degli Autori, Venice’s Critics’ Week, the Berlinale, the Locarno IFF, the Karlovy Vary IFF, the Annecy Italian Film Festival, the Turin Film Festival, the Pesaro Film Festival, the Trieste Film Festival and the Torino Film Lab. In terms of TV commissioning editors and national and international distributors, RAI Cinema, Fandango, I Wonder, Amarena Film, Pluto Film, Intramovies, MovieDay, Picture Tree International and Academy Two were all in attendance.

The winning project from among the MFN Workshop’s selected finalists will be singled out by the When East Meets West festival and the Trieste Film Festival, before being presented at the This is IT event on 25 January 2021. The Milan Film Network first initiated their partnership with When East Meets West and the Trieste Film Festival – and, in particular, their alliance with This is IT - back in 2017 with a view to providing Italian producers with a twofold opportunity, thereby increasing their chances of finding distribution partners on both a national and international level.

Founded in 2019 as a spin-off to the In Progress MFN development workshop, the In Progress LAB event likewise made a comeback this year, hosting a series of meetings which unfolded online on this occasion, organised by the Milan Film Network in collaboration with the Filmmaker festival and Milan’s Luchino Visconti Film School. Geared towards an audience of film students, young authors, producers and audiovisual professionals, the In Progress LAB opens an insider’s window onto the creative, organisational and distribution issues which young authors can find themselves grappling with in the early stages of their professional journeys.

Events held within the In Progress LAB 2020, which ran 26 November – 4 December 2020, included a masterclass intitled “Film planning” by Carlo S. Hintermann - the director and producer of the movie presented at the 77th Venice Film Festival The Book of Vision [+lee también:

 - which explored the organisational aspects of producing a film, while Massimo D’Anolfi and Martina Parenti, the directors of War and Peace [+lee también:

 which competed in the Orizzonti section of the 77th Venice Film Festival, played a central role in three discussions about their work, exploring the crafting of reality, the particular way in which movie production is organised and the composition of film scores.
