The first ever selection of films taken underwing by Wild West (read our new news) - a production company founded by Wild Bunch International and Capricci - has now been revealed. Dedicated to genre film in the wider sense of the term (fantasy, horror, sci-fi, detective movies, thrillers and superhero films), the label has chosen 12 projects, including a fantasy film, two monster movies, a queer sci-fi work and a thriller based on a news story, while titles in development notably include a psychedelic series...

Stealing focus among the lucky few is Le domaine, which is written and directed by Italy’s Giovanni Aloi, whose first feature film The Third War [+lee también:

turned heads in Venice in 2020’s Orizzonti section and will be released in France on 8 September. Billed as a modern-day detective movie about a trio of young people’s downward spiral, along similar lines to Shotgun Stories, the story begins on a night when three ordinary youths massacre the occupants of a hunting lodge. None of them have links with the underworld, but they say they were acting on behalf of a local mobster. The latter, however, claims to have asked nothing of them. A devastatingly ineluctable series of events is unleashed… Raphaël Quenard and Soumaye Bocoum have already signed up to the cast.

Melvil Poupaud, meanwhile, will topline Les mains d’Orlac, written by Dominique Baumard, which revolves around a virtuoso pianist by the name of Stephen Orlac who loses his hands in a car accident. In the hope of getting back to a normal life and resuming his career, he agrees to undergo a revolutionary transplant. But once the use of his hands returns to him, he is overcome by a terrible compulsion to kill. His partner Marie rapidly realises that if she wants her husband to return to the stage, she’s going to have to help him commit murder…

India Hair will star in the cast of Incarnation, a work written and directed by Mael Le Mée, whose main character Lou suffers from a birth defect which stops her from entering puberty, until she one day realises that she’s an artificial being. Caught between her parents and her friends, Lou desperately tries to become a "real girl ", but it’s all in vain. At which point, she embarks upon a joyous exploration of her body and finally frees herself from human notions of gender…

Karim Leklou and Vimala Pons have already signalled their agreement to join the cast of Vincent Must Die [+lee también:

, penned by Mathieu Nartet and set to be directed by Stephan Castang. Out of nowhere, Vincent is attacked by a group of people who are trying to kill him for no apparent reason. He tries to carry on living a normal life, but when things ramp up a notch, he realises he has to take flight and live his life in a whole other way…

Jean-Pascal Zadi, Steve Tientcheu and Slimane Dazi will star in the cast of Dead Man Shoes, which is written and directed by Yohann Gloaguen and which will revolve around Jules, an Uber drive of Senegalese origin living in Paris. One night, a man dies in his car. As he slips his feet into the dead man’s incredible shoes, Jules also steals his identity and becomes King, a charismatic man who wants only one thing: to take his revenge on the person who killed him…

Papier, written and directed by Britta Potthoff and Adrien Pavie, will thrust the audience into 1944 by way of bomb-strewn Alsace. Ten-year-old Emma divides her time between the family library and her father’s factory. Her imaginary world is peopled by paper creatures. On the day the Nazis arrive, Emma’s universe is torn apart, unleashing a terrifying and devastating, black paper monster…

Coeur net, from the pens of Elina Gakou-Gomba and Louise Groult, homes in on Marie and Jasmine who are living the perfect love story, despite the insane levels of jealousy displayed by the latter. In the basement of their new home, Jasmine finds a secret room equipped with security monitors in which she can observe every area of the house. She starts to spy on her partner and spends increasing amounts of time in there, indulging her darkest suspicions... Until the day when she accidentally locks herself in the room…

La concession, which is written and directed by Aurélia Raoull, travels back in time to 1867. Charlotte is one of a convoy of women sent to New Caledonia with a view to populating this new French colony. The 17-year-old orphan finds herself won over by the Kanak spirits of the Caledonian land, causing her to rebel against her husband and the surrounding colonial system…

Likewise featuring among Wild West’s selected works is Les dessins d’Alexandre, a film written and directed by Clément Rière, which sees Alexandre realising that he wields a mysterious power, following a car crash which leaves his mother in a coma: everything he draws, materialises. He makes the most of his gift in order to make his greatest dream come true: reuniting his parents. But Alexandre unintentionally traps them in a veritable nightmare…

Written and directed by Willy Orr, Specimen revolves around Kira, an instagrammer known for her political engagement, who is picked up by a boat manned by Captain Ziani during a migrant rescue operation. Alongside Kira, the latter climb onboard with the Captain who maintains order among his crew. The boat rolls away from the coast, but the influencer doesn’t know where the migrants are being kept, and a troubling creature is showing signs of life…

Last but not least is a series which also features among this first vintage of Wild West projects: the 6 x 52’ series Cygnes, which is written by Mathieu Mégemont and Dominique Baumard, and is set to be directed by the former who will oversee a cast comprising Karim Leklou, Youssef Hadji and Judith Chemla. The story follows in the footsteps of François, a homeless addict of all kinds of drugs who is taken in by his sister Marie. The housing estate where they live is a strange and unsettling community where every resident has a totem animal. While hallucinating, François witnesses killings of teenagers, committed by swans with wings in the shape of razorblades. François becomes a suspect in the case, and the police officer in charge of the investigation must gain access to the former’s visions in order to unearth vital clues...
