A thrilling journey through Italian and international cinematography over the past 70 years which is promoted by the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and was devised and produced by the Audiovisiva platform on the occasion of the fourth edition of “Fare Cinema” (Making Films), “Oltre lo schermo” (“Beyond the Screen”) looks to take us behind the scenes of the filmmaking universe by way of a selection of movies dedicated to the various professions within the sector.

These 15 documentaries will be available to view on demand and free of charge to international audiences until 25 July, via the network of 82 Italian Cultural Institutes located around the world and the italiana portal, with subtitles optional in Italian, Italian for the hard of hearing, English, French and Spanish. These movies will explore some of the most famous film sets, alongside the best known directors –ranging from Luchino Visconti through to Lina Wertmüller, Francesco Rosi and Giuliano Montaldo – revealing the roles and professions without which the magic of cinema simply wouldn’t happen.

There are Oscar winners such as set designer Dante Ferretti and the master composer of legendary film scores Nino Rota. We see stagehands, dressmakers, carpenters, painters and sculptors at work, artists who have dedicated their lives to designing film posters, such as Silvano Campeggi, who flew to Los Angeles to paint the living legend that was Marilyn Monroe. Giuliano Montaldo explains the origins of Sacco & Vanzetti, the difficulties he encountered and the incredible surprises which arose, such as the time Joan Baez met Ennio Morricone and recorded Here's to You - a ballad which became the manifesto of an entire generation – in just a few hours.

And then there’s the tempestuous friendship and mutual respect binding Federico Fellini and Ennio Flaiano together; Piero Tosi, who dressed the biggest divas of all time, from Claudia Cardinale to Silvana Mangano; the legendary director of photography and the filmmaker Carlo Di Palma; Giuseppe Tornatore, who signed his name to the moving documentary on Goffredo Lombardo, a producer who totally redrew the lines of Italian cinema in the latter half of the 20th century with his film company Titanus; the civil cinema of Francesco Rosi, and Alida Valli, the mother of all actresses, according to Giuseppe Bertolucci.
