ZagrebDox Pro has come to an end with the handing out of four awards to the best projects from among the 12 that were developed during the five-day online training programme and Pitching Forum (see the news). The projects were presented to a panel consisting of Tereza Keilová (HBO Europe), Lejla Dedić (Al Jazeera Balkans), Rada Šešić (Sarajevo Film Festival/IDFA), Glenda Balucani (DAE/Doclisboa) and Vanja Jambrović (Restart, Croatia).

The main HBO Europe Award, consisting of a diploma and €2,000 for further development, was granted to the Croatian project Being Related to John Malkovich, directed by Luka Mavretić, which is being produced by Anita Juka (4 film) in co-production with Chiara Toffolo (Italy) and Mario Adamson (Sweden). The story is about a young screenwriter, poet and cinephile exploring a family myth about their kinship with the famous titular Hollywood actor, and the jury stated: “It has many layers, and it is an interesting mix of relationships and legacy in one family’s lineage of men, and light humour, which gives everything a fresh perspective.”

For the second year in a row, the Al Jazeera Balkans Award was handed out, which comes with €1,000 for further development. It was given to the project Silent House, in which directorial duo Farnaz and Mohammadreza Jurabchian discuss their family history with their mother, an Iranian activist. The jury mentioned: “Through archival family footage, narrativised with contemporary images and conversations with their mother, the two filmmakers, a sister and her young brother, will portray the family’s evolution over the course of 40 years in Iran. Their journey will not only reveal a unique directorial approach, but will also offer us an opportunity to hear the voices of the current generation.”

Finally, the Hungarian-Spanish project Cabin Pressure, directed by Eszter Nagy and Sára Czira, received the ZagrebDox Pro Online Mentor Award, including a one-year online mentorship with producer Vanja Jambrović. The documentary follows a young, single woman on her journey towards an unconventional form of motherhood. The DAE Encouragement Prize went to the Bulgarian project Guardians of our Conscience by Stanislav Donchev (Bulgaria), a contemporary socio-psychological portrait of people from Bulgarian urban areas who perform hateful and unpopular jobs.

Talking about the second online version of ZagrebDox Pro, workshop mentors Leena Pasanen (director of the Biografilm Festival in Bologna) and director-producer Stefano Tealdi mentioned: “ZagrebDox Pro has made a name for itself internationally, and every year, we receive appealing and intriguing projects from a variety of countries – not just from the Balkans. However, this year, we are clearly facing the consequences of the pandemic on documentary filmmaking: difficulties in researching, location scouting and shooting teasers were evident, along with some frustration owing to the fact that some filmmakers have had to delay their production schedule by months. We are first and foremost interested in the stories and how they are told cinematographically, but the topics that emerged this year revolved around family, the younger generations and history.”
