Taking place in a hybrid format and returning to the Stora Teatern from 2-3 February, the Göteborg Film Festival’s TV Drama Vision aims to provide answers to key questions, such as how to respond to the need for more high-end drama series while securing a sustainable industry, how to nourish creative talent and bring new capacity into production at the current rate of growth without compromising healthy working conditions, and addressing what the future holds for independent drama producers and co-productions, among other topics.

The honorary guest of TV Drama Vision is award-winning Italian director-producer-screenwriter Luca Guadagnino, who will share his experiences in an exclusive master class. The Nostradamus keynote speech will focus on healthy work in a sustainable industry, as presented by Johanna Koljonen. In a similar vein, Lars Blomgren, head of Scripted at Banijay, will discuss how the firm is disrupting the ever-changing broadcast landscape by championing sustainable creativity and collaboration. CEO of Sagafilm Kjartan Thor Thordarsson, EVP and chief content officer of NENT Group Filippa Wallestam, agent and partner at Albatros Agency Martina Österling and CEO of REinvent Rikke Ennis will discuss how to find common ground, new solutions and a way to collaborate throughout the value chain, in a sustainable way.

Another panel will focus on how to stay relevant for audiences by creating and financing stories that incorporate aspects of diversity and sustainability. Meanwhile, a panel for creative producers will explore the significant changes in the industry that occurred last year, accelerated by the pandemic, and how this has reshaped the conditions for producing. “Coordinating Nordic Sustainability” will, as the title suggests, focus on how to coordinate sustainability strategies on a pan-Nordic level, as in March, the Nordisk Film & TV Fond and the Nordic Eco Media Alliance (NEMA) will launch a partnership revolving around green filming.

Thanks to its spotlight on Finland and Russia, the platform will also present a thorough landscape of the Finnish players and commissioners, along with Moscow-based streaming service START. An array of Nordic broadcasters and streamers (SVT, YLE, NRK, DR, Viaplay, Elisa Viihde, Netflix, TV2 Danmark, TV4 C More and MTV C More) will present some of their upcoming series and their plans for the future. As always, the annual Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize will be handed out at the end of TV Drama Vision.

Regarding the selection, two projects that are currently at the work-in-progress stage are being presented. Swedish director Mikael Marcimain (Horizon Line [+lee también:

It tells the story of three people’s lives, which are shaped and influenced by a random incident – the killing of two tourists – that changes the destinies of the characters, for better or for worse (see the news). The other project is the Faroese crime series Trom, directed by Kasper Barfoed and Davið Óskar Ólafsson, which follows a journalist who returns home to the Faroes after receiving a call from a local activist, claiming that she is his daughter, only to find her dead body (see the news).

Furthermore, five Nordic series that are in development are being presented at TV Drama Vision. Inside Your Border by Simon Elvås tells a fictional story based on an arms deal that Sweden made with Thailand in 2013, just a couple of months before the Thai government was overthrown by a military coup. Two projects hail from Finland: Feud by Marlon Saares, in which two students and fencers travel back in time to 1661 to save a student who has been condemned to death for learning Arabic suspiciously quickly; and The Great Unknown, the untold story of Sally Salminen, a young woman who writes a prize-winning novel while working as a housemaid in 1930s New York City and becomes famous overnight, directed by Inka Rusi. Similarly, Iceland is bringing along two projects: As Long as We Live, in which a former queen of pop, now a struggling mum in a stale marriage, misses the thrills of her past life, written by Anita Briem; and Home Is Where the Heart Is, in which three middle-aged siblings find themselves in a complex situation when their parents are diagnosed with cancer, created and directed by Tinna Hrafnsdóttir.

Four European projects in development have also been selected. From Germany comes Gold Train, a family drama with a mysterious twist, by Matthias Lutthardt, as well as Vanished, written by Mikael Torfason: set 20 years after the collapse of East Germany and her father’s disappearance, a woman in Reykjavik is after a reckoning. In Jinx, from Croatia, written by Maja Pek-Brünjes and Mario Kozina, a young female Romani detective is sent to investigate a string of retaliations in a troubled Croatian-Romani community, and in This Is Not Sweden by Aina Clotet and Mar Coll, from Spain, two parents move to an idyllic suburb of Barcelona to raise their daughters “consciously”, but when the son of a much-admired mother in the community commits suicide, fear starts to take hold. Finally, The Stolen Kids, from Chile, which follows the discovery of a network that traffics Chilean children to foreign couples, rounds off the selection.
