In-person awards ceremonies in late winter, following a physical edition of the Berlinale… It’s beginning to look a lot like 2019, you might say (although it definitely doesn’t “feel” like it). With this return to the film industry’s typical calendar, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has unveiled the award nominations for its 2022 edition, in advance of a ceremony with a “full audience” at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 13 March, a fortnight before the Oscars.

For a yearly awards ceremony that is typically accused of over-resembling the Oscar line-up, a look at the nominations shows progress in some areas, flanked by conformity in others. Over half of the Best Film nominees are partially European, although all have English as their primary language. Following on from the organisation’s rule changes in advance of the 2021 event, the Best Director line-up has a notable presence of films that excelled at major European festivals this year and last year – namely, courtesy of Palme d’Or and Golden Lion winners Julia Ducournau and Audrey Diwan, for Titane [+lee también:
