Netflix and Finnish public broadcaster YLE have announced they will co-produce Dance Brothers, a young adult dance drama and Endemol Shine Finland’s first scripted commission. The announcement was first reported by Variety.

The plot details of the ten-part show, penned by Reeta Ruotsalainen (the TV series Arctic Circle), remain undisclosed, but it has been confirmed that the story will follow two brothers in the 1920s who start a dance company. Taito Kawata is attached to direct the project. Filming is set to being this spring in Helsinki.

The new drama series was announced by Lars Blomgren, Banijay’s head of scripted, during a keynote at this year’s Göteborg TV Drama Vision. He said that “contemporary dance will be an important part of the drama” and promised it being “a truly local show” with strong potential “to appeal to broader audiences outside of Finland.” “It’s an ambitious show and an original story that’s really out of the box, so finding the right partners was key and Max Malka was able to do it thanks to her stellar track record,” he added.

Dance Brothers is created and executively produced by Max Malka, Endemol Shine Finland’s head of scripted, with Netflix and YLE co-producing. Unne Sormunen will also serve as executive producer. The release date is yet to be disclosed.
