Thirteen new projects have been granted funding from the IDM South Tyrol Film Commission  as part of the first 2022 call offering aid for the production and pre-production of feature films, documentaries, TV series, short films and short form series. 154 days of shooting are subsequently planned on Italian soil.

Stealing focus among the various projects selected - including eleven Italian works, one hailing from Germany and another from Austria - is the new movie by the director of Hidden Away [+lee también:

and the story, written by the director alongside one of his long-term collaborators Fredo Valla, is based on Mario Cavatore’s novel Il seminatore. Lubo is a street artist, a Swiss gypsy who has his children taken away from him by a state institution. He searches for them relentlessly and sets about taking revenge in his own way, blurring the thin line between good and bad. The movie is produced by Rodeo Drive and Aranciafilm together with RAI Cinema.

). Penned by Fabrizio Bozzetti, the movie tells a story in which female solidarity and complicity have the power to overcome racism and prejudice. Turin-based firm La Sarraz Pictures are helming production, in co-production with Germany’s Heimatfilm and Belgium’s Gapbusters Société Anonyme.

Another co-production in receipt of support, made in league with Germany and Austria, is Zweitland by South Tyrolean director Michael Kofler, who also authored the screenplay. The story is set in the Alto Adige region after the 1961 terrorist attacks, where introvert Paul suddenly finds himself having to support the young family of his big brother Anton, a terrorist on the run. The film is produced by Bolzano-based outfit Helios Sustainable Films in co-production with Germany’s Starhaus Filmproduktion and Austria’s KGP Filmproduktion.

Così com'è, meanwhile, which is Antonello Scarpelli’s first work, moves between Calabria and Germany. Written by the director, the story revolves around a family who are trying to find a way to communicate with one another. The film unfolds in a modern-day setting and follows a mother’s worries over her children who are struggling to find steady jobs while her husband is also suffering from Alzheimer’s. The film is produced by Bolzano’s Albolina Film in co-production with Germany’s Sutor Kolonko e.K.

Another German work comes in the form of Lassie - Una nuova avventura (working title), a new instalment of a well-known family movie, this time directed by Hanno Olderdissen. Produced by Germany’s Henning Ferber Filmproduktions, this new film adaptation homes in on Florian who, with the help of his four-legged friend Lassie and a group of young companions, tries to stop a criminal gang from stealing pedigree dogs and auctioning them off to the highest bidder.

Austrian-produced (blue+green communication) Flash Wars by Daniel Wunderer tackles some highly topical themes. Unrest, pandemics and police brutality have led to a rise in demand for more efficient peacekeeping methods. But can machines really make the world a safer place? What would happen if these weapons were hacked and used against the very people they’re supposed to protect?

Last but not least, we find Luca Vendruscolo’s (Boris - Il film [+lee también:

) new feature film in pre-production, provisionally named Italy first. The director is writing the film alongside Simona Nobile, while South Tyrolean firm Enrosadira Pictures are producing the movie in league with Rome’s Dugong Films.

The full list of selected projects can be accessed here. The next deadlines for requesting support from the Fund managed by the IDM Film Commission are 3 May and 20 September 2022.
