For the second year running, the MIDPOINT Institute is running MIDPOINT Smash Cut, a project-based programme for creators of short-form series (with episodes ranging from 1-20 minutes).

The training scheme is designed to help participants define a series concept, and it will also explain the specifics of short-form series and the difference with long-form shows in terms of storytelling. The selected filmmakers will gain a deeper understanding of the creative aspects involved in the work, as well as insights into financing and distribution strategies. Smash Cut offers expert lectures, intensive group work and in-depth individual consultations with several guest tutors. The participants will also be actively writing during the workshop days, under the supervision of the tutors.

Programme coordinator Alexandra Gabrižová explains: “Short-form series have established themselves as a great modern incubator of fresh, new voices, open to experimenting with the new possibilities of streaming platforms and social media. We see it as a trend that could reach TikTok or Instagram audiences, where the principles of storytelling and short creative formats are challenging, inspirational and ‘smash cut’ straight to the point.

“Submitted projects may be developed in various formats lasting from 1-20 minutes per episode. We are ready to welcome creative teams or individuals with a passion for developing serialised stories. Short-form series can also be a good stepping stone for those who don't have any previous experience with episodic storytelling and would like to dive deep into the waters of series making.

“In an intensive, practical workshop, our experienced tutors Sullivan LePostec, Kirsten Loose and Hyppe Salmi will not only guide participants through story development itself, but will also offer a diverse range of lectures and consultations touching upon the subjects of financing, producing strategies, sustainable writing and a broadcaster’s perspective.”

The programme accepts both solo creators and creative teams consisting of a writer (or writers) and producer with a project, and it is open to projects from the whole world, with a focus on the CEE region. The incubator starts off with an online pre-training session in November, and the workshop will run from 16-22 November in Tallinn during Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event.

The call for MIDPOINT Smash Cut is now open, and the deadline for applications is 20 September. All of the necessary details can be found here.
