The 26th edition of the Baltic Sea Forum for Documentaries (Baltic Sea Docs) concluded this past Sunday, with 18 film projects being pitched this year, hailing from ten different countries, including the three Baltic states, Ukraine, Poland, Finland, Lithuania and Georgia. This year’s forum was conducted mostly on site, with approximately 100 guests in attendance throughout the week, although there were also some online elements so as to include industry professionals from across the globe.

After the teams took part in preparatory workshops with a number of professionals, the projects were pitched in front of a panel of industry experts – who provided live feedback on the projects – and observers. These experts included buyers, commissioners and sales agents from the likes of the BBC, YLE, NHK, Al Jazeera, Taskovski Films and Rise and Shine.

Following the conclusion of the event, four awards were handed out. The Ukrainian-UK co-production Little People (directed by Ivan Sautkin, produced by Elena Saulich of Babylon'13 and co-produced by Mike Lerner of Roast Beef Productions) received the Current Time TV Award, which comes with a cash prize of $2,000. The film focuses on several people involved in the Ukrainian war, whose seemingly “small” actions make huge differences in turning the tide of the conflict.

Another project focusing on the war won the BB Post House Award, which comes with post-production services to the value of €3,000. The Latvian-Ukrainian co-production The Blessed Ones (directed by Andrii Lysetskyi, produced by Gennady Kofman and Olga Beskhmelnytsina of MaGiKa Film, and co-produced by Uldis Cekulis of VFS Films) looks at the war through the eyes of four contemporary artists, each of whom have very different ways of confronting the horrors around them.

Two further awards were conferred by Baltic Sea Docs itself. These grant invitations to one producer and one director to pitch their upcoming project at the forum without undergoing the regular selection process. The BSD Producer’s Award went to Ukrainian producer Oleksandra Kravchenko, who was on hand to pitch Iron Man (One Day I Wish to See You Happy) (directed by Maryna Nikolcheva, Ukraine), a very personal and intimate story of the film's director and her husband.

Finally, the BSD Award for Best Director went to Finland’s Mia Halme, who participated with the project FCL - Fabulous Cow Ladies, which is about three cows living in the forest pasture, and the three women who own the animals and take care of them.

Zane Balčus, Baltic Sea Docs project manager, said: “It was very special to welcome participants and guests to Riga in person again and, at the same time, have those participating online also enjoying full access to the main components of the forum. The years of the pandemic have left an imprint and led us to establish elaborate, online tools, and they simultaneously made us appreciate in-person meetings even more than before. We are looking forward to the development of partnerships between filmmakers and commissioning editors and sales agents, and to screening the completed films in the coming years.”

During Baltic Sea Docs, Creative Europe - MEDIA Desk Latvia also hosted a discussion titled “Mental Health of the Documentary Industry in Times of War”. There was also a public screening schedule of eight recent documentaries, including three titles that had previously been presented as projects at Baltic Sea Docs. These were screened in Riga and four regional towns.

Baltic Sea Docs is organised by the National Film Centre of Latvia, and is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and the State Culture Capital Foundation. The next edition of the forum is planned to take place in Riga in early September 2023.
