Written by the director, the story revolves around Pierre Bonnard who wouldn’t be the well-known painter he is today if it weren’t for the enigmatic Marthe who features in more than a third of his works. Maria Boursin, alias Marthe de Méligny, was posing as a ruined Italian aristocrat on the day they fell madly in love with one another. Little did she know that she would soon become the mainstay of a gigantic body of work, which is now considered to be one of the most significant from the beginning of the 20th century.

Bonnard, Pierre et Marthe is produced by François Kraus and Denis Pineau-Valencienne on behalf of Les Films du Kiosque, in co-production with France 3 Cinéma, Volapuk and Belgium’s Umedia. The feature film is pre-purchased by Canal+, Ciné+ and France Télévisions, and also enjoys the support of the Sud region. Filming unfolded between 22 August and 18 October in Paris and La Valette, with Guillaume Schiffman heading up photography (nominated for the 2012 Oscar in his speciality via The Artist [+lee también:
