When the director first met Apolonia in 2009, she appeared to be leading a storybook life. This talented individual was born in an underground theatre in Paris and grew up in an artist community – the ultimate bohemian existence. In her twenties, she studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, one of the most prestigious art academies in Europe. Over the years, Lea kept returning to film Apolonia as the latter sought her place in the art world, grappling with the agonies and joys of womanhood, relationships with others, and her own body and creation. As time passes and a special bond grows between Apolonia and Lea, we witness a film being born and a painter rising to fame. Thirteen years on, the two women continue to reflect on each other’s paths in this mesmerising film about art, love, motherhood, sexuality, representation, and how to succeed in a world dominated by patriarchy, capitalism and war, without losing oneself.

Speaking about the project, Glob commented: “The first time I had a conversation with Apolonia, via Skype, I instantly felt like I was already in a film. I was watching this woman enter the frame, and as I was speaking with her, all kinds of people would come into view from all sides of the screen. There was a young boy saying something, and then a woman came. All of a sudden, I was witnessing three or four different stories unfold within our conversation. And the whole time, Apolonia was just capturing my attention. I knew at that moment that she would be the person for the film. As a documentarian, you know that some people are just creating a film with their presence, and you just need to frame it, in a way. Back then, I didn’t know what an incredible paintress she would become, but I thought Apolonia had this incredible face for cinema, the face of a great actress.”

Apolonia, Apolonia was produced by HBO MAX and Sidsel Lønvig Siersted for Danish Documentary Production (Denmark), in co-production with Małgorzata Staroń for Staron Film (Poland). Its international sales have been entrusted to CAT&Docs.
