Beginning yesterday at Series Mania was the first of three working sessions from the first edition of Going European (read the news), a training programme launched this year by the CNC in partnership with the Series Mania Festival, the co-production and networking Spanish market Conecta Fiction & Entertainment and the Sarajevo Film Festival - CineLink Industry Days. Financed by the MEDIA programme of the European commission for a three-year period (2023-2025), this programme aims to train international duos of authors in co-writing, co-development, and co-production of international series.

) and Spanish director Isabel Andrés Portí (who worked on several award-winning documentaries for ARTE, ZDF, TVC, Amazon Prime and Netflix) who will work on the series project Les Reyes (also co-written with Fuzi), an action drama set in the 1990s world of MMA fights and organised crime, between Perpignan (France) and Spanish Catalonia.

Also selected in the duo composed of Croatia’s Maja Pek-Brünjes (drama series The Mountain and scripts on the detective series Jinx and The Witch Hunter) and Serbia’s Matija Dragojevic (the thriller/fantasy series Awake, awarded in 2021 in Sarajevo; the series Wool winner of the prize for best screenplay at Zagreb 2022’s NEM) who are co-writing the series Moon Coast, a drama series about the transformation of a remote Croatian island into the «Ibiza of the Adriatic» and the problems induced by this sudden change.

The duo made up of French-Burkinabe director Fabien Dao (the series De plus en plus loin) and Beninese writer-director Ange-Régis Hounkpatin (a graduate from la Fémis, writer on the second season of Wara) who are working on the project Princesse Téné, a west-African western-style series set in Ouagadougou, in the colliding worlds of horse races and drug trafficking.

Also part of the selection are French-American director Laetitia Mikles (who has directed many documentaries, among other things) and English director Flynn Roddam (assistant director on the sixth season of Peaky Blinders, among other things) who are co-writing the anticipation drama The Protected, set in a near future where a matriarchal regime is being established in Europe.

Finally, this first edition of Going European also includes the pair composed of Spain’s Víctor Santos (a famous graphic novel creator, whose work Polar was adapted by Netflix) and the UK’s Anthony Alleyne (the feature film Sunburn in 2020) who are working on the dystopian, post-apocalyptic series Motorway.

The participants will meet for three intensive one-week training sessions, which will take place during the three partner events. They will participate in exchanges, workshops and masterclasses on the specific issues involved in the conception of an international series: creative, financial, legal and environmental aspects, as well as production, distribution and promotion issues, while meeting with seasoned professionals from the entire value chain of the series industry. Over three years, a total of 30 auteurs will be supported by the programme.

The list of projects:

Les Reyes - Julien Paolini (France), Isabel Andrés Portí (Spain)
