Tomorrow, the 15th edition of the unmissable Lumière Film Festival (directed by Thierry Frémaux) will open in Lyon, the biggest world event dedicated to heritage cinema with 200,000 spectators and 9,000 accredited participants. Until 22 October, 180 films will be presented (with about 450 screenings) accompanied, as always, by a myriad of prestigious guests.

The 2023 Lumière Award will be given to Wim Wenders to whom a retrospective will be dedicated (including the recently Cannes-awarded Perfect Days [+lee también:

) and who will deliver a masterclass. Also of note in the retrospective programme is a Zoom call with Spanish director Ana Mariscal about “the permanent history of female filmmakers”, a Focus on American filmmaker Robert Altman and another on French director Denys de La Patellière, and six exclusive restorations of works by Japanese filmmaker Yasujirō Ozu.

Amongst the guests to be honoured (with several bonus previews on the menu) and who will be giving masterclasses are Wes Anderson, Alexander Payne, Terry Gilliam and Taylor Hackford, Spanish actress Marisa Paredes, her French colleague Karin Viard and Jean-Jacques Annaud (whose The Name of the Rose will close the festival). Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón will pay tribute to the late Swiss filmmaker Alain Tanner, Michel Hazanavicius will celebrate the 30 year anniversary of La classe américaine, French actor Patrick Bouchitey will revisit his first feature as director (Lune froide) and Japanese animation master Rintaro will shine a light on the work of his colleague Sadao Yamanaka.

The lavish programme also includes tributes to Jacques Rozier and Jane Birkin, Satyajit Ray’s Apu trilogy, a Disney centenary including a Star Wars, a Kenji Misumi night, the “Sublime moments of silent cinema” section, the “black and white classics”, the “Cult!” section, a selection of exclusive documentaries and of course the most beautiful restorations of the year in the Lumière Classics (from William Wyler to Tsui Hark, Stanley Kubrick to François Truffaut, as well as Julien Duvivier).

To note that from 17 to 20 October, the 11th edition of the International Classic Film Market (directed by Juliette Rajon), which has updated its formula under the motto “The Re>Birth Place of Cinema” with several roundtables and showcases on the programme, a Sweden Focus, and presentations of recently restored films or restoration projects looking for partners.
