The 23rd Tribeca Film Festival hosted over 570 events across New York City, featuring a variety of European films in its extensive line-up (see the news). The juries for this year's edition also acknowledged several of these movies. “I'm delighted to see they've chosen to honour a diverse, international, adventurous group of films that truly reflect the Tribeca spirit. We can't wait to continue to follow and support all of these movies’ journeys into the world,” commented Tribeca Festival director and SVP of programming Cara Cusumano.

Kazak director Assel Aushakimova won the Best International Narrative Feature Award for her sophomore film, Bikechess [+lee también:

This dark comedy follows disenchanted Kazakh journalist Dina (Saltanat Nauruz) as she navigates the absurdity of state propaganda promoting combined cycling and chess activities while grappling with ethical challenges, family tensions and a complicated relationship with her married cameraman. The jury remarked, “This film caught us unawares. With a lightness of style and a use of cinematic language that led us into a society of oppressed youth and passive leadership, and with stylish performances and generous cinematography, we met a country and the state of the world.” The film, a co-production between Kazakhstan, France and Norway, won the Works in Progress Award last year in the industry strand of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (see the news).

A Special Jury Mention for an International Narrative Feature went to Yasemin Samdereli’s Samia [+lee también:

ficha de la película]. The film was honoured “for exploring the vital issue of refugees with humanity and integrity”. The jury also praised “the beautiful performances by everyone involved”. Samia tells the inspirational true story of Samia Yusuf Omar, a determined young Somali runner who, despite the harrowing conditions of civil war and societal constraints on women, strives to reach the Olympics.

The top prize in the documentary competition was awarded to Simon Klose for Hacking Hate [+lee también:

This doc follows Swedish journalist My Vingren, known for her in-depth investigations into white-supremacist networks, as she goes undercover online to expose the radicalisation tactics of the extreme right. She collaborates with whistleblower Anika Collier Navaroli and researcher Imran Ahmed to hold tech companies accountable and combat the pervasive online hate culture. “The documentary jury awards a film that bravely and fearlessly investigates the misuse of the internet to encourage hate and bias by allowing media giants to profit from and foster the continuation of the outrage. On trial are First Amendment freedoms that have been violated for profit,” stated the jury.

A Special Jury Mention went to Xinyan Yu and Max Duncan for their documentary Made in Ethiopia. The film explores the impact of growing industrialisation in Ethiopia and China's influence in Africa. It follows a Chinese factory director, a factory worker and a local farmer in a farming town where a Chinese industrial park is being developed, examining the tension between tradition and modernity. ficha de la película] received a Special Mention in the inaugural Viewpoints Competition for its exploration of “the taboo subject of women’s mental health during and after pregnancy”. Rupert Houseman was honoured with the Award for Best Editing in a Documentary Feature for his work on Antidote. This UK film presents a gripping and urgent exploration of the deadly consequences of being on Vladimir Putin's “hit list”. The movie follows a whistleblower from Russia's poison programme, a twice-poisoned political activist accused of treason and a man exposing Putin's criminal network. All three individuals risk their lives to fight repression and violence.

For its inaugural European edition, the Tribeca Film Festival will move to Lisbon, with the Beato Innovation District serving as the main venue for the three-day event from 17-19 October. It will bring together artists and storytellers from across the globe, and will include a curated collection of both Portuguese and international films. Attendees can look forward to live talks with Portuguese and international talent, immersive installations and numerous networking opportunities. Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, Patty Jenkins, Whoopi Goldberg and Griffin Dunne have all confirmed their presence.
