BritBox International (UK), Wolf Hall producer Playground (UK) and Salt Films (Ireland) are teaming up on a new version of Lynley, based on the novels penned by US writer Elizabeth George. The 4x90-minute reboot of the popular 2000s series, now filming in Ireland, is penned by Sherlock writer Steve Thompson and directed by Ed Bazalgette.

The lead guitarist of rock group The Vapors in his youth and a seasoned TV director, Bazalgette has previously helmed episodes of successful shows such as EastEnders, Holby City, Poldark, Doctor Who, The Last Kingdom and The Witcher.

According to Deadline, the new adaptation intends to be distinct from the previous BBC series, which starred Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small, and aired for six seasons from 2001-2008.

The cast of the new Lynley is led by Leo Suter (Vikings: Valhalla) and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso), who play DI Thomas Lynley and DS Barbara Havers, an aristocratic police detective and a maverick sergeant from a working-class background. Together, the mismatched duo becomes a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done, while the series tackles issues around personality, gender and class.

Colin Callender and David Stern are serving as the project’s executive producers for Playground alongside Thompson, George and Suzanne McAuley, who is acting as series producer via Salt Films.

A tentative release date is set for mid-2025.
