German sales outfit Beta Film has sold the new Italian-German show Pale Mountains to five key territories, Cineuropa has learnt. The gripping drama, set against the stunning backdrop of Bolzano in South Tyrol, has been sold to the USA, Canada, the UK and Ireland for GSN, as well as to Turkey, while also keeping Italian audiences hooked over this past month.
During its premiere on RAI 1, the show attracted an impressive 2.8 million viewers for its first two episodes. The third and fourth episodes attracted even more viewers, pushing the audience to 3 million. This week, the final two episodes rounded off the series, once again securing the most viewers of the night and keeping the ratings as high as they had been since week one.
In detail, the 8x60-minute series delves into the tensions between the German-speaking and Italian-speaking communities as a notorious serial killer resurfaces. Years ago, inspector Paolo was injured trying to catch the killer, losing his leg and his girlfriend. Now obsessed, he teams up with Eva, a German-speaking assistant prosecutor. They must act quickly, knowing that the monster will strike again.
The series is helmed by Davide Marengo and Giuseppe Bonito, and stars Elena Radonicich, Matteo Martari and Richard Sammel in the leading roles.
Oliver Bachert, chief distribution officer at Beta Film, told Cineuropa: “Pale Mountains reaffirms that our strategy of producing locally compelling drama for a global audience is a winning formula. The gripping series consistently drew millions of prime-time viewers in its home market. Simultaneously, it has found new international audiences with broadcasters and streaming platforms worldwide.”
Pale Mountains was produced by RAI Fiction and Beta Film subsidiary Cross Productions, with backing from IDM and in association with Beta Film.
